Hey…Thanks!

This morning I was sitting in a meeting with 40 successful business owners when one of them stood up and said:

“Forget politics.  Raise your hand if, from a business perspective, are you better off now than you were four years ago.”

Just about every hand went up.

This gentleman’s point was about gratitude and giving thanks.

Here in the United States, we just went through one of the nastiest political seasons in our history.  The politicians threw mud and other excrement at each other for the better part of two years, at every level – local, state and federal.

Everyone was exposed to this toxic behavior.

Yet in spite of all the negativity, most of us are in a better place than we were four years ago.

Even if your personal net worth is lower than it was at the beginning of The Great Recession, you probably see a shimmering glimpse of potential somewhere on the horizon.

Think about that for a moment.  Think about the one thing in your business or in your life for which you are most grateful. Feels pretty good to have that relationship/person/thing in your life, right?

What if you constantly thought about how grateful you were for that one thing?

What if you obsessed over it?

What if you started telling everyone you know about this one specific area of your business or your life?

What if you replaced any bitching and complaining you usually do with an expression of gratitude for things that you had and things that were going well in your life?

The simple process of replacing negativity with gratitude can transform your life and your business.

It is a mindset shift of immense proportion.

Over the years, making this shift has re-energized the corporate executives, business owners, and lawyers with whom I have worked.

Spend a few minutes, right now, making a list of the things for which you are grateful.  Fold that list up and keep it in your pocket.  Read it when you get up in the morning, when you eat lunch and when you go to bed.  Call someone each week and share at least one item on the list with them.

This exercise, if done consistently for six weeks, will transform your life.

As I write this, my son’s fourth birthday was yesterday and the Thanksgiving holiday is tomorrow.

The gravity of the emotion associated with these events is significant.

I am grateful for the love and support provided to me by my remarkable family.

I am grateful for this amazing country I live in.

And I am also grateful for having you as a part of my life.  Thank you for being here.

I wish you and your family a peaceful and abundant Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday season.
