Both had been better than average students, both loved the law and both clerked for prominent judges while in law school. Case Study One: Steve Klitzner

Steve Klitzner

Steve was a personal injury attorney back in the 1980’s – when the lawyers were actually allowed to run you over with a car and then represent you against the insurance company.

He was a fine lawyer, financially successful but miserable.

Then one day he responded to an advertisement for a training program for lawyers and changed his focus. He went out on his own and began representing people with IRS problems.

Now, several decades later, he has a thriving firm that handles this type of work exclusively. His staff does the bulk of the work and he is the CEO.  He loves his work, enjoys coming to the office each day, and spends as much time as possible traveling and visiting his children and grandchildren.

Case Study Two: Alicia Dearn

Alicia Dearn

Alicia owns a law firm based in St. Louis and San Diego. She’s the General Counsel for the Libertarian Party, has represented a United States Presidential Candidate, and focuses her firm on helping business owners avoid trouble. But she also represents them when trouble finds them.

She’s already successful but she knows she can help more clients. Her goal is to grow her law firm to over $100 million in revenue.

Imagine the shock on the faces of the attendees at our strategic retreat, when Alicia recounted a huge mistake she made.

Russ JacobsRuss’ story is one of my favorite client success tales.

When I met him, Russ was literally standing in a low-end shopping mall, in an economically depressed area of Miami, with a bullhorn. Like a carnival barker, he was shouting advice to people whose homes were in distress.

Russ is an outstanding real estate attorney. He had a great job as a lawyer at a big company and, timing not being his strong suit, left to open his own shop right at the time the real estate market cratered.

He thought he was going to lose his own house when he opened his practice because the economy was so bad.

Slowly but steadily, Russ put some solid business strategy into practice. He focused on his strength – public speaking – and leveraged it to develop a following of local realtors. Since he is a caring and likeable guy, Russ is able to build relationships quickly.

How quickly?

Well, he’s six years removed from the soapbox and bullhorn routine and he only sees clients by appointment in the building HE OWNS…

That’s right.

This guy went from hawking clients in a crappy mall to managing a staff of five (plus three associate lawyers) and working with the best of the best in the real estate community and owning real estate himself – a building which is partially rented to offset his fixed costs.
